HP8500 Queues on SGI systems (lpr/lpd)

The following queues are available for the new printer on the SGI systems which RCC maintains. If they are not available on your system, please contact RCC Operations ops@sr.unh.edu to request that they be added.

hp8500-big
# full color, 11x17 paper

hp8500-trans
hp8500-manual
# full color, transparencies
# full color, manual feed tray

Ocassionally, you will find a print job that becomes corrupted when sent through one of these queues. Usually these jobs were generated by dvips, but not always. This is due to a bug in the ESP Print software we are using to select printer features. We are currently working with people at EasySW to resolve this problem.

In the meantime, we have added a hp8500-raw queue to allow you to print those jobs which the ESP software corrupts. This queue bypasses the ESP software, but only can print single-sided color printouts on letter sized paper.

hp8500-raw # raw mode

To use any of these queues, use the standard lpr command syntax:

    lpr -P queuename postscript_file(s)

ie:

    lpr -P hp8500c colorfile.ps

HP8500 on Macintosh, Windows

Contact RCC Operations, ops@sr.unh.edu, to have your machine configured to use the new printer. Once your machine is configured, you will be able to take full advantage of the printer. The following paper trays are installed and loaded for your convenience:

Tray 1 Manual Feed, up to 11x17, maximum 58lb stock When using heavy paper (>28lb), you must select the proper paper type in the printer driver. It is strongly recommended that the left output tray be used when printing on heavy stock.
Tray 2 8.5x11 HP Transparencies When using this tray, select "Letter" as the paper size, and "Transparency" as the paper type for proper output.
Tray 3 11x17 20lb bond paper When using this tray, select "11x17" or "Tabloid" as the paper size, and "Plain" as the paper type for proper output.
Tray 4 8.5x11 20lb bond paper When using this tray, select "Letter" as the paper size, and "Plain" as the paper type for proper output.
